Third Space Learning’s calculation policy shows how we approach teaching addition, subtraction, multiplication and division in our primary tutoring and resources.

We focus on developing understanding of the four operations progressively, using a range concrete, pictorial and abstract methods.

Our calculation policy shows how we develop understanding of foundational concepts (such as number pairs within 10) and build upon these concepts later. We have provided suggestions of different concrete resources, pictorial representations or abstract methods that could be used when teaching each concept.

For example, number pairs to 100 can be taught using tens frames and place value counters, base 10 drawings, hundred squares, base 10, bead strings or a Rekenrek.
